Blog Stage 7

The topic of abortion has been a hot topic in the recent years. Abortion is the ending of pregnancy due to removing an embryo or fetus before it can survive outside the uterus. Their are people who identify themselves as pro-life or pro-choice, I am pro-life. The slaughter of an baby before it has even entered this world is cruel and wrong. The fact that people are wanting to legalize the killing of  a human life, is absurd. The murder of any life should not be legalized and should be a punishable offense. According to The Endowment For Human Development "About 3 weeks, one day after fertilization, is when the heart first begins to beat, the sound of the little heart is too soft to hear. Very soon thereafter, they can see the motion using ultrasound technology" (Campbell). According to the New York Times "not until the end of week 5 and into week 6 (usually around forty to forty-three days) does the first electrical brain activity begin to occur" (Gazzaniga). Most women don't get abortions until way after five or six weeks, so technically it could be considered murder. However, there are some exceptions to this, there are cases of woman getting raped and impregnated and want to get abortions because they don't want to constantly relive that memory through seeing that child. I would agree, and say that would be a tough thing to do, to have something horrible like rape happen to you and then have a child come out of that and see that child everyday would be rough. The aborting of a child is wrong and should never be considered while pregnant. If you are willing to have sex and not use protection then you should face the consequences of having a child.

  1. The blog is kind of interesting. I do agree with you to a certain level. Yes if a woman is willing to have sexual intercourse then she should be open to the idea of having a child. There are some cases like you mentioned that an abortion should be granted. I personally know a couple of women that got pregnant even while using protection. They physically weren't able to carry the child and give birth. They both were diabetics and often times that will cause great issues during the pregnancy and at child birth. I don't think abortion is the cure all though. I do believe it's morally wrong and I don't understand how some can manage to do that. I know at times abortion can be the only option. Like you mentioned there are also some cases where abortion could be a better option. Especially in rape cases. Abortion has been in conversion for years and years. Some people are open to it and some people are against it. Ultimately I believe abortion should not happen unless there is no way around it.

  2. In Brendan Hurley's editorial titled "Blog Stage 7," he discusses whether or not abortion should be illegal. In his article, he compares abortion to murder, which would provide grounds to make abortion illegal. Murder is defined as the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. While I recognize his argument's merit, I don't think that termination of a pregnancy should be considered murder, or punishable.

There are many situations outside of rape where a woman might need or want an abortion. Sometimes accidents happen, the condom rips, birth control fails, or drunken mistakes were made. The amazing thing about the ruling in the case of Roe v. Wade is that it's no one's business. Women's right to abortions is protected by our right to privacy. From conception to birth, or termination it is not the government's place to decide.

Hurley claims that the first heartbeat makes an embryo a baby. If the embryo is considered a baby at the first heartbeat, which occurs at about 3 weeks after conception, most women wouldn't know they are pregnant before it is too late. Most women don't know they are pregnant until 5-6 weeks into their pregnancy. While I don't believe that people should be allowed to have abortions willy-nilly, it absolutely should not be illegal.

The case of Roe V. Wade determined that laws could not make abortion illegal because we have a right to privacy. It isn't about whether abortion is good or evil, it simply isn't within the government's power to decide. Unlike actual murder, no one else is in danger or at risk of having any of their rights to life liberty or pursuit of happiness infringed on when a woman makes the decision not to carry a pregnancy to term. Sometimes it's not a matter of right or wrong it's simply none of your business.
